Ultimate LaborKit Product Review by Metropolitan Mama

We have been fortunate to have our LaborKit reviewed by many women and birth/baby/mom related companies but we are really looking forward to our review by Stephanie Sheaffer, aka Metropolitan Mama.

Stephanie's blog, MetropolitanMama, is written with a positive, down-to-earth perspective that always makes her blog and easy, enjoyable read. Her blog is geared to moms and moms-to-be to help them navigate through the baby and toddler years with how-to articles, commentary on culture/motherhood, product reviews and a personal look at her life and the challenges of working and being a mom.

At Stephanie's request, we sent her a LaborKit for review in February. We didn't realize at the time that Stephanie was expecting baby #2 in just a few weeks. Well, that was February and now its late March. Stephanie had a beautfiul baby girl on March 13th. Her birth story is amazing -- a water birth at a birth center, no complications and a rather speedy labor and delivery.

We look forward to her review of LaborKit -- what she loved, really needed, what wasn't necessary or how we can improve our kits. I know the Lansinoh is a must-have for any nursing mom and, based on a recent blog, Stephanie appreciates it too!

Doulas are rising in popularity, but what are they?

The Today Show aired a segment today called "Expecting Parents: What is a doula?" and I was so surprised that people still don't know what a doula is.

A doula is a person that offers support for mom and dad during birth and the postpartum period. They are present for labor and birth and some will support a family when adjusting to life with a new baby. They are there for physical and emotional support. DONA describes a doula as "a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Also, according to DONA, "Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeeding more easily."

The greatest benefit to mom is the ongoing support that she will receive even during a hospital birth. Usually people associate Doulas with homebirths but this isn't so. With chronic nursing shortages, moms just don't get the support that they might like during a stressful, often unknown, physically challenging time. Doulas can help women have the birth experience they want and can work with your obstetrician and nurse to support your choices. Doulas aren't doctors and may have little, if any, medical training -- their role is to assist in labor and delivery to comfort and encourage mom.

Some relief of nausea with Preggie Pop Drops

As many of you may know, nausea during pregnancy and labor can make an exciting experience miserable. The Deluxe and Standard Plus Laborkits include Preggie Pop Drops as an item in the kit. As news continues to emerge regarding concerns over the safety of plastic drinking containers, we've removed the water bottle as well.

The BabyTime.ca Show

Well the show is over, and it was outstanding. We had a chance to talk with so many nice people, and received tons of positive feedback about the LaborKit.

There was definitely a trend among the visitors. The Mom's that had already had kids, were very definitive about their sentiments: "I wish I had one of those when I had kids". And many bought kits for their upcoming pregnancies. The certified trainers were also very enthusiastic and resolute about our LaborKit. First-time mom's-to-be were interested and thought that it was a great idea, but had some questions around why they might need some of the items. We'll be working to answer these questions in our featured product postings (in which we'll use some of the comments from the second time Mom's mentioned above) in the weeks going forward.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, and also to those who purchased kits. Good luck in the months to come with your new loved one!

LaborKit Hospital Bag - Featured Product

Periodically we're going to feature a product and why its a great resource to have when delivering a baby.

Today, the featured product is the "Bringing Home Baby" dvd (approximately 71 minutes) that's included in each LaborKit.

Bringing Home Baby is a dvd designed specifically for new parents. Filled with baby care information from newborn to six months old, this dvd is a must have for any expectant parent.

This instructional video is a great addition to prenatal classes because you can take it home with you. Its like being able to bring the prenatal instructor back home with you after the classes are done.
